Perfumed ~ Savoury ~ Elegant structure
Montague Estate Mataro of 2022 is a brilliant reminder of how refined Mataro can be when it comes from a proper Great Southern site. Sourced from the Swinney vineyard in Frankland River, it shows that distinctive regional ironstone feel, a subtle ferrous, mineral edge that gives the wine its lift and authority. The style is medium weight and beautifully composed, built around perfumed red fruits and a little raspberry brightness, then finishing with wild brambly herbs and a dry, savoury pull.
Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre) is often loved for its savoury complexity and food-friendly structure, and this release nails that brief. It is not a heavy, oaky red. Instead, it feels fresh, stylish and quietly serious, with fine tannins and just enough oak seasoning to frame the fruit. A cracking bottle for roast meats, grilled vegetables and anything herb-driven off the barbecue.
Why You’ll Love It
- 95-point Mataro from Frankland River, one of WA’s best regions for savoury reds
- Perfumed red fruit with a raspberry lift, not jammy or heavy
- That Frankland ironstone character adds a mineral, slightly ferrous edge
- Medium weight and elegant, with wild brambly dried herbs through the finish
- Only 20% new French oak, so the fruit stays front and centre
