New Reserve ‘Mystery’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 RRP $75

new halliday 95 point score

*To ensure all of our customers can enjoy this release, we have allocated a maximum limit of 6 bottles per order*

This is one of the most exciting Mystery Wine offers we have secured. Behind the concealed label is a premium reserve-level Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon from a highly awarded Western Australian producer you will certainly know. It normally sells for $75 a bottle, has received 95 points from the Halliday Wine Companion and has won two major Gold Medals.

Purchase this with any mixed six wines and the price drops to exactly 50% off its $75 recommended retail price.

The wine itself is a beautifully perfumed and finely structured expression of Margaret River Cabernet. Cassis, redcurrant and dark berries are layered with black olive, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, florals, cedar and gently roasted spice. The palate has excellent concentration and length, yet it remains elegant rather than heavy. Savoury, fine-grained tannins provide structure, while several years of bottle development have allowed the fruit and French oak to become increasingly harmonious.

Why You Will Love It

  • Two major Gold Medals: Gold at both the Wine Show of Western Australia and Perth Royal Wine Awards. Its 2024 Gold Medal was awarded five years after vintage, confirming how beautifully the wine was developing.
  • Premium Margaret River Cabernet: From one of Margaret River’s most well-known wineries, made from carefully selected fruit grown in one of Australia’s greatest Cabernet regions.
  • Elegant rather than overpowering: Big on flavours, elegant & smooth body, with fine tannins
  • Beautifully matured: The 2019 vintage has had time for its fruit, tannins and French oak to become integrated. It’s now entered it’s prime drinking window

Why Is It 50% Off?

There is nothing wrong with the wine. It is not damaged stock, a cleanskin or a cancelled export order.

It is simply the last remaining stock of the 2019 vintage.

We received a sensational offer to take the final stock, allowing us to secure the wine for far less than its normal wholesale cost. We have passed those savings on to our customers in full.

The producer still lists the wine at its normal $75 RRP, but you can purchase it for $37.50 when included in any mixed six.

You do not need to purchase six bottles of this particular Cabernet. It can be combined with other eligible wines from across our range to qualify for the mixed-six price.

Once the remaining bottles are gone, this vintage and this offer are finished.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep purple-black moving towards garnet at the edges, reflecting both its concentration and gradual development in bottle.

Aromatics

Perfumed cassis, redcurrant and dark berries are joined by black olive, dried herbs, tobacco leaf and subtle floral notes.

Oak and secondary characters

Cedar, roasted spice and gentle woodsy notes add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. Bottle age is beginning to reveal more savoury and earthy detail.

Palate

Medium-bodied but intensely flavoured, with concentrated red and dark fruits carried by a seamless line of acidity and fine Cabernet tannins.

Texture

The wine feels polished and composed, with ripe, savoury tannins providing grip without becoming coarse or overly drying.

Finish

Long, focused and persistent, with lingering cassis, redcurrant, dried herbs, cedar and savoury spice.

Awards and Accolades

95 Points Halliday Wine Companion

The review praised the wine’s aromatic lift, concentrated berry fruit, savoury oak spice and substantial yet beautifully ripened tannin structure.

It was considered a deeply flavoured Cabernet with excellent balance and considerable potential to continue developing.

The original review has been reworded to protect the identity of this Mystery Wine.

Gold Medal 2024 Wine Show of Western Australia

This is arguably the most important result for the wine.

It received Gold at five years of age, demonstrating that it had retained its fruit, fragrance, freshness and structural balance as it matured.

Rather than being recognised only as a promising young Cabernet, this award confirms that the wine has successfully developed in bottle.

Gold Medal 2022 Perth Royal Wine Awards

A second major Gold Medal from one of Western Australia’s most established wine competitions.

Together with the later 2024 Gold and the 95-point critic review, it establishes this as a genuinely premium Margaret River Cabernet.

The 2019 Margaret River Vintage

The 2019 growing season was mild and steady, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to develop its flavours and tannins gradually.

Rather than producing an excessively ripe or heavy wine, the season favoured perfume, freshness and fine structural detail. The resulting Cabernet combines concentrated fruit with floral lift, dried herbs and finely shaped tannins.

These characteristics have helped the wine mature slowly and retain impressive freshness several years after vintage.

It is now showing a beautiful combination of primary cassis and redcurrant fruit with developing notes of cedar, tobacco, spice and savoury complexity.

Vineyard and Winemaking

The wine was made from a small selection of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit grown in Margaret River.

Before fermentation, the fruit received a period of cool maceration to gently extract colour, aroma and flavour from the grape skins.

Fermentation began naturally before being carefully guided to ensure the desired texture and structure were achieved.

Following pressing, the wine was matured in a combination of new and seasoned French oak. The modest proportion of new oak added structure and subtle spice, while the older barrels allowed the Cabernet fruit and vineyard character to remain clearly defined.

Only the strongest individual barrels were selected for the final wine. It was then bottled carefully and given additional time to mature before release.

This restrained approach has produced a Cabernet with impressive concentration, fine tannins and integrated oak rather than excessive extraction or heaviness.

Serving and Cellaring

Serve this Mystery Cabernet at approximately 16 to 18°C.

If the bottle has been stored in a warm room, place it in the refrigerator for approximately 30 to 45 minutes before serving. A slightly cooler temperature will help define its fruit, perfume and fine tannin structure.

Stand the bottle upright for several hours before opening so that any natural sediment can settle at the bottom.

Decant gently for approximately 45 to 60 minutes. This will help the cassis, redcurrant, florals and savoury characters become more expressive while allowing the tannins to relax.

The wine is entering a wonderful drinking window now but has the structure to continue developing into the early 2030s.

Food Pairing Suggestions

  • Roast lamb: The wine’s cassis, dried herbs and savoury tannins are a natural match for lamb with rosemary and garlic.
  • Chargrilled steak: Cabernet’s structure balances the richness of rib eye, sirloin or scotch fillet.
  • Roast beef: Its redcurrant fruit, cedar and roasted spice complement a traditional roast with vegetables and gravy.
  • Slow-cooked beef cheeks: Concentrated fruit and savoury complexity work beautifully with rich, slow-cooked meat.
  • Hogget or mutton: The mature fruit, herbal notes and firm structure suit the deeper flavour of older lamb.
  • Roasted beetroot: Beetroot’s earthy sweetness complements the wine’s red fruit and developing savoury characters.
  • Mushroom dishes: Mushroom risotto or roasted field mushrooms pair well with its cedar, tobacco and earthy complexity.
  • Aged cheese: Mature cheddar, Gouda or Manchego complement the wine’s fruit concentration and fine tannins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What wine will I receive?

You will receive the original, fully labelled bottle from the producer.

The Mystery image is used only on our website to protect the identity of the wine and allow us to offer it at a heavily reduced price.

Why can’t you reveal the producer?

The wine is still sold at $75 direct from the winery.

Revealing its identity publicly could disrupt the producer’s pricing and its relationships with other retailers. Keeping it secret allows us to offer an exceptional price without devaluing the wine or its brand.

Why is it 50% off?

We were offered the final remaining stock of the 2019 vintage at a sensational price.

We agreed to take the remaining allocation and have passed the savings on to our customers in full. There is no quality issue with the wine.

Do I need to purchase six bottles of this wine?

No. You can combine it with other eligible wines from across our range.

Once your order contains six or more eligible bottles, the Mystery Cabernet drops to $37.50 a bottle.

Is the $75 RRP genuine?

Yes. The wine’s established recommended retail price is $75 a bottle.

At $37.50 in a mixed six, you are receiving a genuine 50% saving.

Is the wine ready to drink?

Yes. The 2019 vintage has developed beautifully and is now entering an excellent drinking window.

Decant it for approximately 45 to 60 minutes to help the aromas open and the tannins relax.

Is it a heavy Cabernet?

It has excellent concentration and intensity, but it is more elegant and finely structured than heavy.

The wine is medium-bodied, with perfumed fruit, savoury detail, fine tannins and a long finish.

Why is the 2024 Gold Medal important?

It was awarded five years after the wine was made.

This provided the judges with an opportunity to assess how well the wine had developed, rather than judging it only on youthful fruit and potential. The Gold Medal confirms that it retained excellent freshness, structure and flavour as it matured.

Can I cellar it further?

Yes. It is drinking beautifully now but should continue developing into the early 2030s under suitable storage conditions.

Keep the bottles somewhere dark and temperature stable, ideally around 12 to 16°C.

Will this offer return?

Not for this vintage.

This deal exists because we secured the producer’s final remaining stock. Once those bottles are sold, the 2019 vintage will be finished.

Why Is It a “Mystery” Wine?

The Mystery Wine concept allows us to offer premium Western Australian wines at prices that would not normally be available publicly.

By concealing the producer online, we protect the wine’s established retail value while giving our customers access to a genuine bargain.

This is not a cleanskin or an unknown bulk wine. You will receive the proper bottle, complete with the original producer label, vintage and packaging.

The only mystery is the name on the bottle. The quality, accolades and saving are very real.

I have been buying my wines from Kirk for about two years now and I have never had a bad experience or wine. I love the fact that the wines are all West Australian, so supporting local and lower carbon footprint. He delivers when it’s convenient for me and brings the wine to my door. Wines are all good quality and well priced, especially the cleanskins. Highly recommended
