Peel Estate Verdelho 2026

partners in wine wa gold rating

Peel Estate Verdelho 2026 is a distinctive Western Australian white with far more flavour and texture than its pale colour might suggest. Lifted tropical fruit, florals and citrus lead into a soft, luxurious palate with impressive richness. Mango, guava, peach and lime are joined by gentle spice, with the ripeness of the fruit creating a broad and satisfying texture. Although the wine tastes generously fruity, it finishes dry, long and beautifully balanced.

This is an excellent alternative for anyone looking beyond Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. It is aromatic and refreshing enough for warm-weather drinking, but substantial enough to accompany seafood, creamy cheeses and generously flavoured dishes.

Why You Will Love It

  • Something genuinely different: Verdelho represents only a very small proportion of Australia’s white wine production.
  • Richly aromatic: Tropical fruit, citrus, flowers and spice create an inviting and expressive bouquet.
  • Bone dry but generously fruity: Ripe mango, guava and peach provide flavour without leaving a sweet finish.
  • More texture than most fresh whites: The palate is soft, broad and luxurious rather than thin or sharply acidic.
  • A long Peel Estate history: Verdelho has been grown at the estate since 1980.
  • Made entirely at the estate: Peel Estate produces its wines onsite in its original brick and timber winery.
  • Excellent with food: Its richness allows it to accompany seafood, spice, creamy sauces and soft cheese.

Accolades & Reviews

Partners in Wine WA – Gold 95 Points
Bursting with tropical aromas and flavours. Enjoyed several glasses of it at the winery and thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice texture too.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Bright pale straw with youthful green highlights.
  • Aromatics: Lifted tropical fruit, florals and citrus, with mango, guava, peach and lime joined by gentle spice.
  • Palate: Soft, broad and luxurious, with ripe tropical fruit flowing across a richly textured palate.
  • Sweetness: Bone dry, despite the generous fruit flavours creating a naturally ripe and rounded impression.
  • Texture: Fuller and softer than many aromatic white wines, giving it enough presence to accompany a meal.
  • Finish: Long and balanced, with lingering tropical fruit, citrus and spice.

Winemaker’s Note

Peel Estate describes Verdelho as a variety capable of producing intensely fruity and highly aromatic white wines.

The 2026 release shows the spicy, floral bouquet and distinctive richness associated with excellent examples of the variety. Its soft and luxurious palate is particularly full bodied for Verdelho, with ripe fruit creating both flavour and texture.

The finish remains dry, balanced and persistent, making it suitable for drinking on its own or alongside a wide variety of foods.

Verdelho at Peel Estate

Verdelho has been part of the Peel Estate vineyard since 1980.

This long history gives the winery considerable experience with a variety that remains relatively uncommon across Australia. While Shiraz and Chardonnay are far more widely planted, Verdelho accounts for only a very small portion of the national wine-grape harvest.

The variety is well suited to warmer regions because it can develop intense tropical flavours while retaining the acidity needed to produce a refreshing dry white.

At Peel Estate, Verdelho’s natural richness is complemented by the winery’s proximity to the Indian Ocean and the character of its coastal limestone soils.

The Peel Wine Region

The Peel wine region sits between the Swan District and Perth Hills to the north and Geographe to the south.

Its coastal areas experience a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Breezes from the Indian Ocean help moderate summer temperatures and support even grape ripening.

Peel Estate is located at Karnup, between Rockingham and Mandurah, in an area characterised by coastal limestone sands.

These conditions allow Verdelho to achieve generous tropical flavour and ripeness while retaining the freshness required for a balanced dry wine.

The combination of ripe fruit, maritime influence and limestone soils helps shape the wine’s full flavour, soft texture and refreshing finish.

Storage and Serving Tips

Serve Peel Estate Verdelho at approximately 9°C.

Avoid serving it icy cold straight from the refrigerator. Excessively low temperatures can suppress its tropical fruit, floral aromatics and spicy detail.

Remove the bottle from the refrigerator approximately five to ten minutes before serving. Use a normal white wine glass with enough room for the aromatics to open.

No decanting is required, although allowing the wine to sit in the glass for several minutes will reveal more of its tropical and floral character.

The wine has been made for immediate enjoyment. Drink it young while its fruit and aromatics remain at their most vibrant.

Food Pairing Suggestions

  • Grilled prawns: Tropical fruit and citrus work beautifully with sweet prawn meat and gentle char.
  • Fresh fish: Try it with grilled barramundi, snapper or fish tacos.
  • Seafood pasta: The wine has enough texture for pasta with prawns, scallops or a light cream sauce.
  • Thai and Vietnamese dishes: Tropical fruit and freshness complement lime, chilli, coriander and other fragrant herbs.
  • Portuguese chicken: Spice and ripe fruit work well with paprika, garlic and grilled chicken.
  • Brie or Camembert: The winery particularly recommends soft French cheese, with the wine’s texture matching the creaminess.
  • Roast pork: Ripe fruit, spice and acidity provide a refreshing contrast to pork and crackling.
  • Fresh summer salads: Lime and tropical fruit suit salads containing avocado, mango, cucumber or grilled seafood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Verdelho?

Verdelho is a white grape variety with Portuguese origins. In Australia it is most commonly made into a dry, aromatic table wine with tropical fruit, citrus, floral and spicy characters.

Is Peel Estate Verdelho sweet?

No. It is a bone-dry wine. Ripe mango, guava and peach flavours can create a fruity impression, but the finish remains dry and balanced.

Is Verdelho similar to Sauvignon Blanc?

Both can be aromatic and refreshing, but Verdelho is generally richer, softer and more tropical. It usually has less grassy character and more body than Sauvignon Blanc.

Is Verdelho similar to Chardonnay?

Verdelho can have some of Chardonnay’s palate weight, but it is generally more aromatic and tropical. Peel Estate’s version does not rely on obvious oak flavour for richness.

Why is Verdelho uncommon?

Verdelho represents only a small proportion of Australia’s white grape production. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris are much more widely planted and familiar to consumers.

Where is Peel Estate?

Peel Estate is located at Karnup, between Rockingham and Mandurah. It is approximately 45 minutes south of central Perth, depending on traffic.

How long has Peel Estate grown Verdelho?

Verdelho was first planted at Peel Estate in 1980, giving the winery more than four decades of experience with the variety.

Should Verdelho be served very cold?

It should be chilled, but not icy. Approximately 9 to 11°C allows its tropical fruit, florals and spice to remain expressive.

Does it need to be decanted?

No. Open it shortly before serving and allow it to develop naturally in a normal white wine glass.

How long can I cellar it?

This wine is intended to be enjoyed young while its tropical fruit and floral aromatics are vibrant. It is not necessary to cellar it before drinking.
