Peel Estate Zinfandel
Wimps beware! This wine is made from some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in Australia (1976) and blended with some younger vines from the Geographe region.
This has a real ‘wine for heroes’ nose. The palate is big with hints of liquorice and heaps of flavour. It is obviously a wine for eccentrics and is made to rival Stilton cheese. Very limited quantities of this wine are available in each vintage.
The 2023 vintage is just a tad lighter (compared with 2020) with slightly more fruit from Georgraphe compared with the previous vintage, but the alcohol, fruit and tannins are all in harmony producing another fantastic mouth feel and lingering finish.
History of Zinfandel
For most people, Zinfandel is widely considered an Italian variety. It goes under the name Primitivo, and the southern region of Puglia (the heel of Italy’s boot) is the variety’s hotbed. In Italy you will find Primitivo or Zinfandel as a muscular dry red or as a fortified wine. It is common for the variety to be blended with other red varieties.
Where the variety hailed from was never questioned until the invention of DNA profiling. This new science revealed that it was Croatia rather than Italy that was the mother country.
