Graphite and violets ~ Dark berries

The Montague Estate Cabernet Sauvignon of 2023 is a polished, modern Margaret River cabernet that leans into both fragrance and structure. It opens with classic cabernet cues, cedar and cigar box, blackberry briar and a hint of mocha, then shifts into the darker, more savoury side of the spectrum with graphite, violets and an olive tapenade note that gives it real regional character.

The palate follows through with black cherry, dark plum and blackberry, framed by fine tannins and neatly judged French oak. It is medium to full bodied without feeling heavy, and finishes long, dry and savoury. A small supporting blend of Malbec and Cabernet Franc adds extra nuance and lift, while keeping Cabernet firmly in the driver’s seat. If you like Margaret River cabernet that feels composed, savoury and food friendly, this one is a very safe bet.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Classic Margaret River cabernet profile with a savoury, mineral edge
  • Cedar, mocha and graphite complexity, not just fruit sweetness
  • Medium to full bodied with fine tannins and a long, elegant finish
  • French oak is present but balanced, adding polish without dominance
  • A small addition of Malbec and Cabernet Franc builds extra detail and perfume

FAQ 🧐

Why add Malbec and Cabernet Franc to Cabernet Sauvignon?
In small amounts they can add perfume, mid-palate shape and extra detail, while cabernet still provides the core structure and length.

Is this a big, heavy cabernet?
It is medium to full bodied, but it reads more savoury and structured than jammy, with fine tannins and a dry finish.
