Woodgate Rose 2024

partners in wine wa gold rating
rare partners in wine wa logo

The Woodgate Rosé of 2024 is a wonderfully different style of rosé, created from the rare combination of Brachetto and Chardonnay grapes and given nine months in traditional clay amphora. The result is a wine with a beautifully soft and creamy texture, gentle strawberry flavours and an easy-flowing palate. Its freshness is present, but the acidity feels rounded and integrated rather than sharp or dominant.

There are very few Australian rosés made like this, and even fewer combining Brachetto and Chardonnay. It is special without being challenging, distinctive without sacrificing drinkability and unlike almost anything else in the rosé section.

Why You Will Love It

  • A genuinely rare blend: Brachetto and Chardonnay are rarely combined, particularly in an Australian rosé.
  • Nine months in amphora: Traditional clay vessels help build texture and subtle savoury complexity without adding an oak flavour.
  • Soft rather than sharp: The acidity is gentle and beautifully integrated, making this an exceptionally smooth and approachable rosé.
  • Strawberries and cream: Soft strawberry fruit is wrapped in a creamy, rounded texture.
  • More than a summer drink: Its texture and depth make it just as suitable for food as it is for relaxed afternoon drinking.
  • Made for adventurous wine drinkers: A compelling choice for anyone looking for something beyond the usual pale, crisp rosé.
  • Unusual but extremely drinkable: The winemaking may be adventurous, but the finished wine remains soft, generous and very easy to enjoy.

Partners in Wine WA Review

The first thing you notice is the texture. While many rosés are driven by crisp acidity with the fruit sitting quietly behind it, the Woodgate Amphora Rosé turns that idea around. The acidity is soft and beautifully integrated, allowing the creamy mouthfeel and gentle berry flavours to take centre stage. Strawberry fruit flows smoothly across the palate, accompanied by delicate floral and citrus notes. It is distinctive, exceptionally easy to drink and a true delight for anyone looking for a softer, more textural style of rosé.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: A delicate, very pale pink with soft rose-gold highlights.
  • Aromatics: Fresh strawberry, rose petal and red berries are joined by white peach, citrus blossom and a gentle savoury note.
  • Palate: Soft and creamy, with beautifully integrated strawberry fruit and a subtle touch of redcurrant, white peach and citrus.
  • Texture: Rounded and silky rather than lean or sharply acidic, with the extended time in amphora giving the wine shape and presence.
  • Acidity: Gentle, smooth and refreshing, supporting the fruit without dominating it.
  • Finish: Soft and lingering, with strawberries, delicate florals and a subtle savoury quality remaining after each sip.

A Rosé Unlike the Usual

Most modern rosé is made to be pale, crisp and highly refreshing. That style can be delicious, but it often relies on prominent acidity to create its freshness. Woodgate has taken a very different approach. Rather than making acidity the main feature, this wine places texture and gentle fruit at the centre of the experience. It still has enough freshness to remain lively, but it feels rounded, creamy and flowing rather than sharp.

The result sits somewhere between the refreshment of rosé and the texture of a carefully made white wine. It has the strawberry fruit expected from rosé, but carries it with greater softness, depth and presence. This makes it especially appealing to drinkers who normally find rosé too tart, thin or acidic. It is also an intriguing alternative for Chardonnay drinkers who enjoy creamy texture but would like something lighter and more fruit-driven.

The Rare Brachetto and Chardonnay Blend

Brachetto and Chardonnay are extremely unusual blending partners, but each variety contributes something important to this wine. Brachetto is an aromatic red grape originally associated with Piedmont in north-western Italy. It is known for fragrant strawberry, raspberry, rose petal and gently spiced characters. It provides the wine’s delicate pink colour, soft berry fruit and floral perfume.

Chardonnay plays a very different role. It brings body, structure and a more restrained fruit character, helping prevent the aromatic Brachetto from becoming overly perfumed. Its white peach, subtle citrus and natural texture provide a foundation beneath the strawberry and floral notes.

Together, the two varieties create a rosé that is aromatic without being overpowering, creamy without feeling heavy and refreshing without relying on sharp acidity. In simple terms, Brachetto provides the perfume and strawberry fruit, while Chardonnay gives the wine its shape, softness and substance.

Why Amphora Matters

An amphora is a traditional clay vessel that has been used for fermenting and storing wine for thousands of years.

Unlike a stainless-steel tank, an amphora can allow a very gentle interaction between the wine and air. Unlike an oak barrel, clay does not contribute flavours such as vanilla, toast or cedar.

This allows the fruit to remain clearly visible while the wine gradually develops greater texture and integration.

The rounded shape of an amphora also encourages the wine and fine fermentation material to move naturally within the vessel. This can contribute to a smoother mouthfeel and help the different elements of the wine come together.

For this Woodgate rosé, nine months in amphora is far more than a novelty. It helps explain the wine’s creamy texture, gentle savoury quality and absence of hard edges.

The amphora does not make the wine taste like clay. Its influence is mainly experienced through texture, softness and the way the flavours flow across the palate.

Food Pairing Suggestions

  • Tomato and burrata salad: The creamy cheese mirrors the wine’s texture, while tomato provides freshness.
  • Prosciutto and melon: Sweet fruit and salty cured meat complement its strawberry and savoury characters.
  • Grilled prawns: The wine has enough freshness for seafood but avoids overwhelming its delicate flavour.
  • Smoked salmon: Its creamy texture works particularly well with the richness of smoked fish.
  • Vietnamese rice paper rolls: Fresh herbs and gentle spice complement the Brachetto’s aromatic character.
  • Roast chicken: More substantial than a conventional rosé, it has enough texture for lightly seasoned poultry.
  • Goat cheese tart: Tangy cheese provides contrast to the soft strawberry fruit.
  • Strawberries with soft cheese: A playful match that highlights the wine’s strawberries-and-cream personality.

I have been buying my wines from Kirk for about two years now and I have never had a bad experience or wine. I love the fact that the wines are all West Australian, so supporting local and lower carbon footprint. He delivers when it’s convenient for me and brings the wine to my door. Wines are all good quality and well priced, especially the cleanskins. Highly recommended
