Perth Hills
An untapped resource that we are excited to showcase. We encourage you to take a drive up through the Bickley Valley. Not only are there some great wineries, but it’s a lovely drive with some fantastic views!
Perth Hills Wine Region
The wines of the Perth Hills are very different from the Swan Valley, even though they are only 25km apart the soil and climate make them very different. In the Perth Hills, a cooler climate and ancient granite soils create a unique environment for winemaking, with several microclimates existing due to the altitude and shape of the hills. This region is celebrated for its boutique wineries, where small-scale producers focus on crafting elegant wines with European varietals like Tempranillo, Durif, Sangiovese and Zinfandel. Perth Hills wines often display crisp acidity, refined fruit flavours, and subtle mineral undertones, reflecting the terroir’s influence.
The region stretches from Jarrahdale where the amazing Millbrook Winery is found, through Bickley and slightly to the North around Mundaring.
Western Australia in general is very lucky with very consistent grape growing conditions compared with the East Coast of Australia. Climate pattens found on the East Coast like El Nino and La Nina have little influence on Western Australia. Instead, winter and spring rain is effected by another climate driver called ‘SAM’ or Southern Annual Mode. Put simply this is the Low Pressure systems that hug Antarctica get pushed further North increasing rain to Southern parts of Western Australia.
